Use the following procedure to connect your controller and PC using
the serial port.
1. Plug the 25-pin (DB-25) male connector end of the serial cable
into the serial port on the back of your controller (fig. 2.18).
2. Plug the other end of the serial cable (with either a 25-pin or
9-pin connector) into the serial port on your PC.
Before you print, make sure your PC, controller, and application are
using the same communication settings. The three settings which
must match are
• Baud Rate • Flow Control • Parity
The factory default controller settings are 9600 baud, XON/XOFF
flow control, and No Parity (None). These settings are used in most
serial printing environments.
Note: Your controller always uses 8 data bits.
See your computer manual for details on checking and setting the
serial interface settings. The controller’s baud rate, flow control, and
parity settings can be checked and changed using the front panel (see
chapter 5 “Configuration,” for front panel setup information) or
using the procedure in “Changing Serial Communication Settings”
later in this chapter.
Baud Rate
The baud rate is the rate at which serial data is sent between the PC
and the controller. Your controller supports 1200, 9600, and 19200
baud rates. The controller’s factory default is 9600.
Flow Control
Flow control is how the controller signals the PC that the controller
is ready to accept data. The controller supports both XON/XOFF
(software) and DTR/DSR (hardware) flow control. The controller’s
factory default is XON/XOFF. Incorrect flow control causes erratic
serial printing.
