Chapter 10 Fluid Imaging

The imaging of samples under ﬂuid is an ever-increasing realm for SPM technology. Imaging
samples under ﬂuid minimizes surface forces on delicate samples, allows observation of biological
specimens in their natural, ﬂuid environments, and allows real-time observations of samples
undergoing electrochemical reactions (ECAFM). In order to conduct ECAFM observations with
electrical potentials, an external potentiostat unit is necessary. Contact Veeco for more information.

This chapter details basic operation of the Dimension 3100 SPM in ﬂuid, using both Contact Mode
and TappingMode. Methods of preparing the sample for ﬂuid operation are also included.
