OPERATION
18. Use the following guidelines when adjusting fl oat:
• Adjust the fl oat so the wrench readings are equal on both sides of the header.
•
For 40- and 45-foot double-knife headers:
adjust the fl oat so the wrench readings are equal at both sides,
and then loosen both right side spring bolts two turns.
• Turn each bolt pair equal amounts. Refer to Step
13., page 60
, and repeat torque wrench reading procedure.
• Set header fl oat as light as possible without causing excessive bouncing to prevent knife component
breakage, soil scooping, or soil build-up at the cutterbar in wet conditions.
• Use a slower ground speed with a light fl oat setting, if necessary, to avoid excessive bouncing and leaving a
ragged cut.
• Use the stabilizer wheels in conjunction with header fl oat to minimize bouncing at the header ends and to
control cut height when cutting off the ground. Refer to

NOTE:
If adequate header fl oat cannot be achieved using all of the available adjustments, an optional heavy duty
spring is available. See your MacDon Dealer or refer to the parts catalog for ordering information.

Locking/Unlocking Header Float
Two header fl oat locks—one on each side of the fl oat module—lock and unlock the header fl oat system.
IMPORTANT:
The fl oat locks must be engaged when the header is being transported with the fl oat module attached so there
is no relative movement between the fl oat module and the header. The fl oat locks also must be locked when
detaching from the combine to enable the feeder house to release the fl oat module.
