The scanner environment must also be considered when locating a
scanner. Avoid locating the scanner in very hot or humid environments.
Cooler, dryer locations are better for service personnel maintaining the
scanner and better for maximizing life of the scanner. Scanner length may
be increased to allow the heads to scan clear of the hottest temperatures
near the machine. Avoid locating a scanner within dryer section hoods
and near exposed dryers. Avoid the splatter of other machine equipment
especially coaters and size presses. Erect shields if necessary to protect the
scanner from the splatter of coaters and size presses as well as sources of
strong heat. Scanner lengths may also be increased to park the scanner
heads clear of coaters to avoid splatter during wash ups.
Consider how power and communications cables are going to be run to
the scanner. The maximum Ethernet communications cable length varies
with the type of cable (see Section 2.9). Conduit routing is best from below
and will likely come up through the floor adjacent to the scanner pedestal.
High pressure air and coolant also is best routed from below, however the
filters and air pressure regulators should be located as near the scanner as
practical. Filters and regulators can be mounted on an adjacent wall. The
plumbing to the scanner can be routed under the floor to the scanner.
Depending on scanner environment, the cable end of the scanner may
have ducting to provide purge air to the scanner. The purge air should be
clean, dry and cooler than the environment of the scanner. The air should
not be so cool that condensation will form on the end supports and beam
covers. There are upper limits to the length of the ducting, especially
when the ducting is not smooth or requires more turns.
2.3. Allocating space
Factors to be considered in allocating space for the Precision Platform
include its dimensions and weight, as well as the operations required to
lift it and set it in place. These factors are described in Subsections 2.3.1
through 2.3.3.
2.3.1. Precision Platform dimensions
To comply with the European Union’s CE safety standards, Honeywell
requires 35 cm (14”) of clearance between the head sheet deflector or
outboard sensors and the scanner’s vertical end support. This makes the
