The Tape Management System (TMS) allows you to validate a tape before recording.
Validation prevents both accidental tape overwrite and overuse of a single tape. The
TMS also lets you assign a group number to the tape.
When Tape Management is enabled , the information used to validate a tape is written
at the Beginning of the Tape (BOT). When REC is pressed, the VCR first rewinds to BOT
and reads the validation information.
There are three parameters in the Validation Information:
• Protect Period Days
• Number of Passes
• Group Number
If the tape meets the validation requirements, you will be able to record. If the tape does
not meet the validation requirements, an error message will be displayed and recording
will be prevented.
The TMS also has an override feature, selectable from the Tape Management submenu,
which allows you the option to record a tape even if it does not meet the validation
requirements.
When a new or blank tape is used, the validation information parameters that have been
entered in the Tape Management submenu will be written to the BOT.
When the “Enable Tape Mgmt.:” line in the Tape Management menu is set to “Yes“, the
annunciator “TMS” will be displayed in the time/date stamp:

Anytime BOT is encountered, head cleaning operation is invoked. This may occur in
Rewind, Search processing or Tape Management. The head cleaning operation takes
between 15 or 20 seconds, but ensures the highest quality images are stored on the tapes.
Important Note:
When the Tape Management System (TMS) is enabled and the REC button is pressed,
the following operations will occur:
• the VCR rewinds to Beginning-of-Tape (BOT)
• the VCR performs a 15 to 20 second head cleaning
• if a new tape is inserted in the VCR, the BOT is initialized to the parameters set up
Tape Management menu
• If a previously recorded tape is inserted into the VCR, the VCR will temporarily go
into Play mode and read the BOT parameters
• the following message is displayed during Validation:
Tape Mgmt Validation
• If all criteria is met, the VCR will then enter Record mode. See the “Tape Management
Submenu” section of this manual for more information.
• If criteria is not met, the following message will be displayed:
Invalid, Press Stop
Then you must press the Stop button and decide if you wish to override the
Validation process. See the “Tape Management Submenu: Enable Override”
section of this manual for more information.

Note: In the event of a Hard
Alarm during the Validation
process, TMS is disabled and
