BRAKE SHOE REMOVAL
Read WARNING on page 6-1.
1. To remove rear brake shoes, place chocks at the front wheels, loosen the rear wheel lug nuts and lift the rear
of the vehicle with a chain hoist or floor jack. Place jack stands under the axle tubes to support the vehicle.
2. Release park brake if latched and loosen equalizer retaining nuts (1) on equalizer rod (2) to slightly
loosen brake cable
.
3. Remove the rear wheels and remove the brake drums. If the brake drums were easily removed, pro-
ceed to step 5.
4. Removing brake drums and badly worn brake shoes.
4.1. On the back of each brake cluster assembly, locate the heads of two brake shoe retaining pins. It
may be necessary to remove sealant material around the head of each pin.
4.2. Insert a 1/2 x 5/8 inch cold chisel under the head of each pin and shear them off as illustrated
. This will release the shoes from the backing plate, allowing them to pivot away
from the inside of the brake drum and allow the brake drum to be pulled free. After completing step
5, skip step number 6.
5. Remove the axle.
5.1. Using 90° snap ring pliers (Club Car Part No. 1012560), remove axle retaining ring (1)
.
5.2. Pull the axle shaft (2) from the axle tube
.

WORN OR DAMAGED BRAKE DRUMS CANNOT BE MACHINED TO REFINISH THEM. REPLACE
AS NECESSARY.

WHEN SERVICING VEHICLES WITH SELF-ADJUSTING BRAKES WITH BADLY WORN BRAKE
SHOES AND WHEN THE DRUMS CANNOT BE REMOVED BY NORMAL METHODS, PROCEED
TO STEP FOUR TO MINIMIZE DAMAGE TO THE BRAKE CLUSTER AND BRAKE COMPONENTS.
