4.8 ADJUSTING FOR THE EFFECT OF SOLUTION DENSITY
ON NOZZLE FLOW
The Nozzle Flow Rate Charts (see Section 4.9) are based on spraying water, which weighs 1.0 kilogram per litre
(8.34lbs. per US gallon - 10 lbs. per Imperial gallon). Conversion factors must be used when spraying solutions
that are heavier or lighter than water.
To use the tables below:
1. Find the specific gravity of the solution to be sprayed.
2. Using the conversion factors from the table below, multiply the desired gpm, gpa or l/ha of the solution by the
conversion factor.
3. Use the adjusted rate to select the proper nozzle size.
Example:
The operator is using 03 tips (XR8003VS) and wants to apply a liquid of 12.8 lbs./ Imp.gal. at 15 gpa at 5 mph.
1. Check the Nozzle Delivery Rate Chart in section 4.9.1. It shows that spraying at 40 psi will apply 14.9 gpa
travelling 5 mph. The nozzle flow is rated at 0.250 Imp. gpm per nozzle.
2. Multipy 0.250 x 1.13 = 0.283 Imp. gpm. The boom pressure must be increased to 50 psi to get this flow
rate, as shown in the Rate Chart.
NOTE: Check with your chemical or fertilizer dealer to find the specific gravity for chemicals or fertilizers heavier
or lighter than water.
