Key Concepts
This section outlines the key concepts of working with the
Properties
dialog box in 3Com Network Director.
Items Supported by
the Properties Dialog
Box
3Com Network Director can display the properties of any item on the
network map. This includes:
■
Nodes
— a node is an object on the network map that represents a
single physical entity. Examples of nodes in 3Com Network Director
are:
■
Device
— a node that provides repeating, switching or routing
capabilities for example a hub, switch, router, or bridge.
■
End-station
— a node that does not have repeating, switching or
routing capabilities for example any PC, Unix workstation, server,
or other client machine attached to the network.
■
Phone
— a node that has voice over IP (VoIP) capability.
■
Subnets
— a subnet is a section of the network in which all devices
have an IP address within a defined range.
■
Device Groups
— a group represents one or several devices and links
that were grouped using the
Edit > Group Devices
menu option.
■
Clouds
— a cloud corresponds to an area of the network map for
which 3Com Network Director lacks topology information.
■
Links
— a link represents the physical connection between two
network nodes.
■
Layer-3 Connection
— a layer-3 connection represents the logical
connectivity between a router or layer-3 switch and a subnet.
See
Chapter 5
for more information.
