Chapter 4: Manage Storage Space
For SHR volumes:

Determine the number of replacement disks required for capacity expansion:
If all the hard disks of the SHR volume are of equal size, at least two replacement disks of larger size should
be used.
If the hard disks of the SHR volume are of different sizes, please follow the below guidelines to replace the
disk:
a
Order the disks from largest to smallest.

The replacement disk should be the largest among all disks.

Judging from the conditions mentioned above, replace one disk with another of larger size.

Log in to DSM as
admin
, and go to
Main Menu
>
Storage Manager
>
Volume
.

Select the volume you want to expand (marked as
Degraded
), click
Manage
, select
Repair
, and then follow
the wizard to initialize the new disk and repair the volume.

When the status of the volume is changed from
Degraded
to
Normal
, repeat the above steps to replace the
next disk.

The system will expand the volume or Disk Group automatically.
Expand a Volume or Disk Group by Adding Disks
If you have empty hard drive bays in your Synology DiskStation, you can expand
JBOD
,
RAID 5
,
RAID 5+Spare
,
RAID 6
, and
SHR
volumes or Disk Groups by adding disks.
To expand a volume or Disk Group by adding disks:

Install a new hard drive for your Synology DiskStation.

Select the volume or Disk Group you want to expand.

Click
Manage
and choose
Expand the volume by adding hard disks
(for volume expansion) and
Expand
the RAID by adding hard disks
(for Disk Group expansion).

Select the hard drive in the
Choose disks
section.

Follow the wizard to complete the setup.
Note:
For RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, and RAID 6 volume or Disk Group, the hard drive size must be larger than the
smallest disk in the volume or Disk Group.
The status of the volume or the Disk Group must be
Normal
.
The status of the added disk must be
Initialized
or
Not Initialized
.
You can also expand your volume with Synology Expansion Unit using the same way.
