TOOTH CONTACT
After backlash adjustment and left side shim selection are car-
ried out, the tooth contact must be checked. Pay attention to the
following points:
• Remove the front drive train (differential) gear assembly.
• Clean and degrease several teeth on the ring gear and drive
bevel gear, and then apply a coating of machinist’s layout dye
or paste to several teeth of the drive bevel gear.
• Install the removed left and right side shim(s) and front drive
train (differential) gear assembly.
• Assemble the gear case cover. (

NOTE:
* Do not apply a sealant to the mating surface of the gear case.
* Do not apply a thread lock to the case bolts.

Front drive train (diffrential) gear case bolt:
22 N·m (2.2 kgf-m, 16.0 lb-ft)
• Rotate the front drive train (differential) gear several turns in
each direction. This will provide a contact pattern on the
coated teeth of ring gear.
• Remove the front drive train (differential) gear and compare
the coated teeth to the examples shown in
1
,
2
and
3
.
• If tooth contact is found to be correct (example
2
), go to page
4-12 to complete installation.
• If tooth contact is found to be incorrect (example
1
and
3
),
the shim must be changed and the tooth contact should be re-
checked until correct (example
2
).

Make sure to check the backlash after the tooth con-
tact h as be en ad justed, si nce i t ma y h ave ch anged.
Adjust the tooth contact and backlash until they are
both within specification. If the correct tooth contact
cannot b e ma intained wh en ad justing t he ba cklash,
replace the drive bevel gear and front drive train (dif-
ferential) gear as a set.
