C-2 Courier User Handbook
LCD –
Liquid Crystal Display.
LED –
Light Emitting Diode.
Modem –
Modulator/Demodulator. A device that converts digital data into
analogue tones and vice versa. This is used to allow data
communications over the analogue telephone network.
PC –
Personal Computer.
PCMCIA – Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. The
association responsible for the standards of notebook swappable hard
disks and other accessories that can be used via a PCMCIA slot.
POTS -
Plain Old Telephone System - the analogue telephone network.
Protocol –
In communications, the set of rules that governs the exchange of
information between two peer devices, allowing them to
communicate with each other.
PSTN –
Public Switched Telephone Network. The public circuit switched
telephone network.
RS232 –
A standard for serial communication. It defines the specified signal
voltages, signal timing, signal function, a protocol for information
exchange and the mechanical connectors.
SPID –
Service Profile IDentifier. A numeric string assigned by an ISDN
service provider to a customer’s equipment to assign class of service
characteristics to a terminal.
XLR –
A connector type which eliminates noise picked up by long cable
runs in professional balanced systems. It uses two positive
connections and one negative for each channel - at the receiving end,
circuitry compares the two positive signals and removes the noise
difference.
