C. Glossary of terms
AES/EBU – American Entertainment Society/European Broadcasting Union.
These are the two groups that defined the digital audio standard for
today’s applications.
ATA–
Advanced Technology Attachment. This is the "official" name for
what the computer industry calls IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics).
CCM -
Courier Configuration Manager software, supplied with your
Couirer.
CODEC –
Coder/Decoder. This is a device is used to convert analogue signals
into digital bit streams and vice versa. It is used to allow voice and
video communication over digital networks.
DTMF –
Dual -Tone Multiple Frequency. The tones generated by a “tone”
dialling telephone. Each “tone” is created as a combination of two
distinct frequencies.
Flash Card – This is a PCMCIA card that can store data on it. Inside the card there
are E

PROMs (Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only
Memory.) which make up the solid state hard disk. The benefit of
having a solid state hard disk is that they are more robust, but they
are more expensive and tend to be smaller in capacity.
GSM –
Global System for Mobile communications. This is the standard
which mobile phones operate (country dependent), and can cover a
variety of frequencies - some companies operate on 900MHz, some on
1800MHz and others on 1900MHz.
Hybrid –
A unit that takes an audio feed and transmits/receives it down a
POTS telephone line. This is different to a modem or a telephone.
ISDN –
Integrated Services Digital Network. A digital network that provides
a wide variety of communications services, a standard set of user-
network messages and integrated access to the network. You can
think of ISDN as a digital telephone line.
