4.7.2
Patient instructions and preparations
1. The patient should be reclined with his/her head/upper back at a 30° angle.
2. Let the patient know that it is typical to feel dizzy.
3. If a fixation light is used during the test, let the patient know that he/she will see
a light come on ‘x’ seconds into the test. The patient should stare at the light
when he/she sees it.
4. Close the video goggles.
5. Set the stimulus device (air or water irrigator) to the desired temperature.
6. After each measurement, open the visor to give the patient some time to recover,
usually 3 to 5 minutes between irrigations.
7. Observe the pauses between the irrigations so that the labyrinth has a chance to
return to a non-stimulated state.

Performing the Calorics test
1. Record the patient's spontaneous nystagmus.
2. Start the measurement by double-clicking in the grid or select
Measurement >
Spontaneous Nystagmus.
3. The
Automatic
button
can be used to run all tests sequentially.
4. Begin irrigating the ear (right or left depending on test order).
5. The measurement window appears in standby mode. Click
Start
to start record-
ing as soon as the irrigator begins. It is easiest to use the footswitch or irrigation
