Configuring Advanced Router Options
This chapter describes several advanced configuration options for the BayStack
820 ISDN Router, including changing the router’s private IP address, assigning
the router a public IP address, configuring Network Address Translation,
configuring static IP address assignments, and configuring packet filtering, IP
settings, IPX settings, and bridging learning settings.
Configuring Advanced IP Settings
When you configure advanced IP settings, you can change the idle timeout value,
modify the router’s private IP address, assign a public IP address to the router,
modify DNS addresses, and enable or disable the router as a DHCP server.
Private IP Addresses
Every BayStack 820 ISDN Router is shipped with the same default private IP
address (192.168.168.230). If you want to use two or more routers to create a
private WAN among your remote offices without using public IP addresses, you
must assign a unique private IP address to each router.
After you change the private IP address of a router, all devices on the LAN
(including the workstation you are using to configure the router) are no longer
able to communicate with the router. You need to reboot all devices so that they
can communicate with the router. Rebooting a device causes it to obtain a new
private IP address from the 100BASE-T router, so that the device and the router
are on the same network.
