H
the engine must be running to do some work, make sure the area is well-ventilated. Never run the engine in an
enclosed area.
o
The exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas that may cause loss of consciousness and lead to death.
CAUTION
o
Some electrical components may . be damaged if terminals o connectors are connected or disconnected while
the ignition switch is ON and current is present.
o
When checki ng the ignition system, a lways fol low the steps in the troubleshooting flow chart ( page 1 6-3).
o
The Ignition control module (ICM) may be damaged if d ropped. Also, if the connector is disconnected when current is
present, the excessive voltage may damage the unit. Always turn off the ignition switch before servicing.
o
I g n ition ti m i ng cannot be adjusted si nce the I g n ition control module (ICMI is non-adj ustable. If i g n ition ti m i n g is
i ncorrect, check the system components and replace any fau lty parts.
o
A fau lty ignition system is often related to poorly con nected or corroded con nectors. Check those connections before
proceeding.
o
U se spark plugs of the correct heat range. Using spark plugs with an i ncorrect heat range can damage the engine.
Refer to Section 2 of the Common Service Manual.
o
For neutral switch i nspection, refer to Section 25 of the Common Service Manual. For switch location, see page 1 6-2
of this manual (System Location).
o
For· side stand switch, engine stop switch and ignition switch inspection, check for conti n u ity chart of the Wiring
Diagram, page 1 9- 1 . Disconnect the ignition and engine stop switch con nectors i n the front side cover ( page 2-3), side
