Alternator
Charging System Inspection
Leakage Test
Turn the ignition switch off, and d isconnect the g round (-)
cable from the battery.
Connect the ammeter (+) probe to the g round cable and
the ammeter (-) probe to the battery (-) terminal.
With the ignition switch off, check for cu rrent leakage.
NOTE
•
When measu ring the cu rrent using a tester, set it to
a h ig h range, and then bring the range down to an
appropriate level. Cu rrent flow larger than the range
selected may blow out the fuse i n the tester.
•
Wh i l e measuring cu rrent, do not turn the i g n ition
switch O N . A sudden surge of cu rrent may blow out
the fuse in the tester.
Specified Current Leakage: 0.01 rnA max.
If cu rrent leakage exceeds the specified val ue, a shorted
circuit is likely.
Regulated Voltage/ Ampere Inspection
•
If the engine m ust be running to do some work,
make sure the area is well-ventilated. Never run the
engine in an enclosed area.
•
The exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide
gas that may cause loss of consciousness and may
lead to death.
NOTE
•
Before perfo rm i n g this test, be s u re the battery is
fu lly charged and that the voltage between its termi
nals is g reater than 1 3.0 V.
Sta rt the engine and wa rm it to operati n g tem pe ratu re,
then turn the ignition switch OFF.
Connect the m u lti meter between the battery term inals.
