STEEL BALLS
TOP CONE RACE
LOCK NUT WRENCH
Apply grease to the bottom steel balls (19) and install it
onto the steering stem.
Be careful not to loose the steel balls.
Apply grease to the upper steel balls (26), and install it
onto the steering stem.
Tighten the steering top cone race fully by hand.
Tighten the steering top cone race using the special tool.
When using the lock nut wrench, use a deflecting beam
type torque wrench 10 inches long. The lock nut wrench
increases the torque wrench’s leverage, so the torque
wrench reading will be less than the torque actually
applied to the lock nut. The specification below gives both
actual and indicated.
TOOL:
Lock nut wrench 45.5 mm
070MA – KPL-I100
TORQUE: Actual: 11 N·m (1.1 kgf·m, 8 lbf·ft)
Indicated: 9 N·m (0.9 kgf·m, 6.5 lbf·ft)
Turn the steering stem lock-to-lock several times to seat
the bearings and races.
Loosen the top cone race.
Tighten the top cone race fully by hand, then loosen it 45°
(1/8 turn).
