Section 8: Backing Up, Restoring
and Upgrading
Backing Up
It is extremely important to back up your DynaVox Series 4 device after adding information or making
changes. Backing up creates a copy of your information and can help prevent data loss in the event of a
device failure. Once your user data is backed up, it can be restored to your device any time it is needed.
The instructions in this section outline the recommended best practice for backing up a DV4/MT4 device.
When you complete the backup procedure, the DynaVox Series 4 software creates a backup (.
bck
) file
includes the following information:
●
Abbreviation expansions
●
Pronunciation exceptions
●
Communication pages
●
Reminders
●
Dictionary entries
●
Selection method settings
●
IR commands
●
User preferences
●
Macros
●
User Setup Wizard information
●
MP3 play lists
The backup file will not include the contents of the
User Files
folder (found in the
File Browser
menu).
The
User Files
folder is meant to be a central storage spot. It includes sub-folders for
Exports
(files that
will be shared),
Images
,
MP3
,
Songs
and
Sounds
. It is important to be aware of the
User Files
folder and
to use it correctly as you are programming. Information that is saved in this folder will be less likely to be
lost or overlooked than files that are saved in random places.
The
User Files
folder is not added to the backup file during the backup procedure. This means that if your
image files, MP3 files, song files and sounds (digital recordings) are lost in a crash, they will not be
brought back when you restore information from a backup file. The best way to preserve these files is to
store a copy of the
User Files
folder in a safe place. The information in this copy can easily be restored to
your device if and when necessary.
