This Dana Spicer axle is sim ilar in design to other
Salisbury type axles with the follow ing exceptions:
1. In order to rem ove the differential case, the carrier
m ust be spread.
2. The drive pinion assembly incorporates an inner and
outer bearing shim. T he inner shim is used to maintain
proper pinion depth. The outer shim is used to m aintain
proper preload on the pinion bearing.
D IF F E R E N T IA L CASE
R em oval
1. Place vehicle on hoist w ith rear axle hanging free.
2. R em ove w heel and tire assemblies.
3. The axle shafts are full-floating type w ith flanged
outer end o f shaft attached to wheel hub by studs and nuts.
W heel is supported by tapered roller bearings at outer end
of axle housing.
a. R em ove axle shaft to hub attaching nuts.
b. Rap on axle shaft to loosen shaft from hub and
rem ove shafts.
4. R em ove plug in carrier and drain lubricant.
5. R em ove cap screws and lock w ashers attaching cover
to carrier. R em ove cover and gasket.
6. Mark one side o f carrier and m atching cap for
reassembly in the sam e position. R em ove bearing caps.
7. U sing spreader tool J-24385, and a dial indicator as
show n in figure 2F, spread carrier a m axim um o f .015 inch.

D o not exceed this dim ension, as carrier
m ay be perm anently damaged.
8. R em ove the dial indicator and use a prybar to
rem ove the differential case from the carrier. R ecord the
