4. A lso coat inner surface o f com pressor Shell with the
oil and swab oil on to shell-to-cylinder O-rings. Place the
com pressor Shell on the cylinder and rotate the retaining
strap to its original location.
5. A ttach the Shell Intalling Fixture J-25008-2 to the
H old in g Fixture J-25008-1, using the long-bolts and plate
w ashers o f the set. Align the step projections o f the
Installing Fixture J-25008-2, to contact the com pressor
Shell evenly on both sides.
6. Push the com pressor shell as close to the O-ring,
Figure I D - 110, as possible by hand and check for equal
alignm ent o f the shell around the cylinder. T ighten the
Fixture screws finger tight.

R-4 COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE
VALVE PLATE A N D /O R RETAINER
Remove and Replace
1. "D ischarge the Refrigerant System" according to the
the D IS C H A R G IN G , A D D I N G OIL, E V A C U A T IN G
A N D C H A R G IN G P R O C E D U R E S F O R C.C.O.T. A /C
SYSTEM S in the A IR C O N D IT IO N IN G section.
2. Perform Steps 1 through 9 o f "R-4 Com pressor Shell
a n d /o r O-Rings" R em oval procedure.
3. R em ove valve plate retainer ring, using Internal Snap
R ing Pliers J-4245 ( # 2 3 ) , Figure 1D -111. R em ove
Compressor D ischarge V alve Plate (Figure I D - 112) for
valve plate replacem ent a n d /o r piston inspection.
R epeat this operation for additional valve plates and
retainer rings. If all four valve plates and retainers are to
be removed, rem ove tw o sets and then rotate com pressor
and H olding Fixture J-25008-1 in vise for access to the
remaining tw o valve plates and retainers.

7. U sin g a wrench, alternately tighten each bolt
approxim ately 1 /4 turn to push the com pressor. Shell over
the O -rings and back against the shell stop flange at the rear
o f the com pressor cylinder.
If one screw appears to require m ore force to turn than
the other, im m ediately turn the other screw to bring the
screw threading sequence in-step or the Shell w ill be cocked
and m ade m ore difficult to install. N orm al installation does
not require m uch force on the wrench if the screws are kept
in-step while turning.
8. W hen the Shell is seated against the stops, bend the
shell retaining strap down into place by tapping gently with
a hamm er. R em ove the Shell Installing Fixture J-25008-2.
9. R e-install Clutch R otor and Bearing A ssem bly,
C lutch Coil and Pulley Rim as an assembly with Installer
J-26271 (Figure ID -88), and the C lutch Plate and Hub
A ssem bly with Installer J-9480-01 (Figure ID -80).
4. Install D ischarge Valve Plates a n d /o r Retainers as
shown in Figures 1D - 111 and I D - 112. Reposition
com pressor and H old in g Fixture in vise as necessary for
access.
