rim or every other m ounting screw location.) D o not rem ove
the screws in the "m ounting notches".
3. Tem porarily m ake a trial fit o f the Inertia R ing to
the P ulley Rim . If any portion o f the sheer edge o f the Pulley
Rim prevents the installation o f the Inertia Ring, the raised
edge m ay be filed o ff to rem ove the excess m etal and
facilitate installation.
DO NOT
use undue force or cock the
ring in assem bling the Inertia R ing in place over the Pulley
Rim that cou ld cause ring distortion or stress.
4. A ssem b le the Inertia R ing on to the Pulley Rim,
being careful to align the inertia ring m ounting holes with
the m ounting holes in the pulley rim. If the Inertia Ring
must be rotated on the Pulley R im for centering the
m ounting holes and cannot be shifted by hand, use a drift
punch or blunt tool and a ham m er to carefully tap the
Inertia R ing at a clearance notch, Figure ID -92, to m ove
the ring into position.
5. Install a special lockw asher onto each 1/4 -2 8 X 1 7 /
32" m ounting screw.
6. A pp ly L octite 601 (or equivalent sealer) to the screw
threads o f each m ounting screw and threads o f the m ounting
holes in the Clutch R otor. W et the threads thoroughly to
ensure com plete thread coverage.
7. Install the screws into the m ounting holes and
tighten finger-tight. Torque each screw to 100 in. lbs.
torque.
8. Lock the three screws in place by flattening the
special washer against two sides o f the hex head screw using
vise grip pliers and one portion o f the lockw asher bent down
over the edge o f the inertia ring slot, Figure ID -92.
DO
NOT
m ove the screw heads from the torqued position.
L ocking o f the screws m ust be sim ilar to the production
form ing o f the lockwasher in order to effectively retain the
screw.
9. R etighten the com pressor drive belt to proper belt
tension.
10. Check com pressor and system operation.
NOTICE:
If "mounting notch" screws m ust be replaced
for any reason, the screws should be torqued into place
(100 in. lbs. torque) using Loctite 601 (or equivalent
sealer) on the threads and locked into place sim ilar to
the original locking m ethod.
Procedure II
INERTIA RING AND PULLEY RIM WELDED
ASSEMBLY ■ REPLACEMENT (NEW PULLEY RIM AND
INERTIA RING KIT REQUIRED)
1. Loosen the com pressor m ounting bracket and
rem ove the com pressor drive belt.
2. R em ove the Clutch H ub and D rive Plate assem bly
as described in "R-4 C om pressor Clutch Plate and Hub
Assem bly" R em oval procedure.
3. T o rem ove as an assembly, perform Steps 1 through
4 o f "R-4 Com pressor C lutch R otor a n d /o r Bearing"
R em oval procedures
but do not loosen or remove the
pulley rim mounting screws,
so as to rem ove the Clutch
R otor and Bearing, Clutch C oil, Pulley Rim and Inertia
4. R em ove all six pulley rim m ounting screws and
lockwashers from the assem bly and discard.
5. Separate the Pulley R im and Inertia R ing assem bly
away from the R otor and Bearing assembly.
6. Inspect the drive surfaces o f the R otor and D rive
Plate to be sure they are still in good condition. R eplace as
required.
7. A ssem ble a new Pulley R im over the Clutch Coil and
m ount the Pulley R im to the R otor and Bearing assem bly,
using the short n otch m ounting locations, Figure ID -91.
The m ounting n otches are located 120° apart radially
around the P ulley Rim .
8. A ssem ble three new lockw ashers on the three new
1 /4-28 X 5/16" m ounting screws and apply L octite 601 (or
equivalent sealer) to the entire thread surface o f the
m ounting screws into the short n otch m ounting hole
locations and tighten finger tight.
9. A lign the Pulley R im so that the bottom o f the rim
notches touch the m ounting screws at all three m ounting
locations. A lso center the drilled holes in the Pulley R im
with the rem aining m ounting holes in the Rotor. W hen the
rim is positioned properly, tighten the three m ounting
screws to 100 in. lbs. torque.
10. Tem porarily m ake a trial fit o f the Inertia R ing to
the Pulley Rim . If any portion o f the sheer edge o f the Pulley
R im prevents the installation o f the Inertia R ing, the raised
edge m ay be filed o ff to rem ove the excess metal and
facilitate installation.
DO NOT
use undue force or cock the
ring in assem bling the Inertia R ing in place over the Pulley
Rim that could cause ring distortion or stress.
