A n inspection should be m ade o f the Internal
M echanism (C ylinder and Shaft) assem bly to determ ine if
any service operations should be performed. A detailed
inspection o f parts should be m ade to determine if it is
feasible to replace them .
Removal
1.
Before proceeding with disassem bly, wipe exterior
surface o f com pressor clean.
2. A ll oil in com pressor should be drained and
measured. A ssist draining by positioning com pressor w ith
oil drain plug down.
Record the amount of oil drained
from the compressor (See "C.C.O.T. Refrigerant Oil
Distribution" in the AIR CONDITIONING section).
3. Invert com pressor and H old in g Fixture J-9396, w ith
front end o f com pressor shaft now facing downward (Figure
1-29).

A dd itional oil m ay leak from the compressor at this
time. A ll oil m ust be drained into a container so that
T O T A L am ount can be measured. (SE E STEP 2 A B O V E ).
A liquid m easuring cup m ay be used for this purpose.
D rained oil should then be discarded.
4. R em ove four locknuts from threaded studs on
com pressor shell and rem ove rear head. Tap uniformly
around rear head if head is binding (Figure ID -29).
5. W ipe excess oil from all sealing surfaces on rear head
casting webs, and exam ine sealing surfaces (Figure ID -30)
If any dam age is observed, the Rear H ead should be
replaced.
6. R em ove Suction Screen and exam ine for any damage
or contam ination. Clean or replace if necessary.
7. Paint an identifying mark on exposed face o f innei
and outer O il Pump G ears and then rem ove gears.
Identifying marks are to assure that gears, if re-used, will
be installed on identical position.
8. R em ove and discard rear head to shell O-ring.
9. Carefully rem ove Rear D ischarge Valve Plate
assembly. U se tw o sm all screwdrivers under reed retainers
to pry up on assem bly (Figure ID -31).
Do not position
screwdrivers between reeds and reed seats.
10. Exam ine Valve R eeds and Seats. R eplace entire
assembly if any reeds or seats are damaged.
11. U sin g tw o sm all screwdrivers, carefully remove
Rear Suction Reed (Figure ID -32).
Do not pry up on
horseshoe-shaped reed valves.
12. Exam ine reeds for dam age, and replace if necessary,
13. U sin g Oil P ick-U p Tube R em ove J-5139 (Figure
ID -33), rem ove O il P ick-U p Tube. R em ove O-ring from oil
inlet.
