and locating gap adjacent to band anchor pin. M ake certain
ring is properly seated in case (Fig. 7A -159C ).
11. Install case to center support bolt by placing the
center support locating tool in to the case direct clutch
passage, w ith the handle o f the tool pointing to the right as
viewed from the front o f the transm ission and parallel to
the bell housing m ounting face. A p p ly pressure downw ard
on the tool handle w hich w ill tend to rotate the center
support counterclockw ise as view ed from the front o f the
transm ission. W hile holding the center support firm ly,
cou n terclock w ise against the case splines, torque the case
to center support bolt to 20-25 ft. lbs., using a 3 /8" 12-point
thin wall deep socket (Fig. 7A -160C ).
N O T IC E : W hen using the locating tool, care should
be taken not to raise burrs on the case valve body
m ounting face.
12. Install interm ediate clutch plates.
a. (A ll m odels except CB, C D and CL) Lubricate with
transm ission oil tw o (2) flat steel and one (1) waved steel
plates and three (3) com position-faced interm ediate clutch
plates and install, starting w ith waved steel plate and
alternating com position-faced and flat steel plates (Fig. 7A -
161C).

b. (M od els CB, C D and CL) Lubricate w ith
transm ission oil three (3) flat steel and three (3)
com position-faced interm ediate clutch plates and install,
starting w ith flat steel and alternating com position-faced
and flat steel plates (Fig. 7A -161C ).
T he m odels CB, C D and CL interm ediate com p osition ­
faced plates are different from the other m odels. R efer to
parts catalog for correct usage.
13. Install interm ediate clu tch backing plate, ridge up
(Fig. 7A -161C ).
14. Install interm ediate clutch backing plate to case
snap ring, locating gap opposite band anchor pin. B oth sides
o f this snap ring are flat, and it is .093" thick.
15. C heck rear end play as follows:
a. Install a 3 /8 " -1 6 bolt or J-9539, into an extension
housing attaching bolt h ole (Fig. 7A -37C ).
b. M ount a dial indicator on a rod and index w ith end
o f output shaft.
c. M ove output shaft in and ou t to read end play. End
play should be from .007"-.019". T he selective w asher
controlling this end play is a steel w asher having 3 lugs that
is located between thrust w asher and rear face o f
transm ission case.
I f a different washer thickness is required to bring end
play w ithin specifications, it can be selected from the chart
show n in Fig. 7A -162C .
