1. Inspect case assem bly for cracks, porosity or inter­
connected passages.
2. C heck for good retention o f band anchor pins.
3. Inspect all threaded h oles for thread damage.
4. On m odel CL inspect studs for thread damage, and
m ake sure they are tight.
The tw o (2) studs at 9 o ’clock and 11 o ’clock (when
viewed from the rear o f case and transm ission in vehicle)
are approxim ately 1/4" longer than the other four (4) studs.
These tw o longer studs are required to accom m odate the
parking brake actuating cable bracket.
5. Inspect interm ediate clutch driven plate lugs for
dam age or brinneling.
If the case assem bly requires replacem ent, rem ove the
nam eplate from the old case and re-install it on the new case,
using the truss head nam eplate attaching screw that is
serviced w ith the case.
6. Inspect snap ring grooves for damage.
7. Inspect bore for governor assembly for scratches or
scoring.
8. Inspect m odulator valve bore for scoring or damage.
9. Inspect cup plug inside case for good staking and
sealing.
10. Inspect case bushing. I f necessary to replace,
proceed as follows:

Rem ove
W ith case properly supported, using tool J -2 1465-8,
with D river H andle J-8092, rem ove bushing.
Replace
U sin g tool J -2 1465-8 adaptor ring J-21465-9, D river
H andle J-8092, and extension J -2 1465-13, with lube passage
facing front o f transm ission case, drive replacem ent bushing
into case until .040 to .055 above selective washer face. Stake
bushing w ith tool J -2 1465-10. Stake marks to be in bushing
lubrication grooves.
IN S P E C T IO N OF C O N V E R T E R
1. C heck converter for leaks as follow s (Fig. 7A -138C ):
a. Install T ool J -2 1369 and tighten.
b. A pp ly 80 psi air pressure to tool.
c. Subm erge in water and check for leaks.
2. Check converter hub surfaces for signs o f scoring or
wear.
Converter End Clearance Check (Figs. 7A-139C
and 7A-140C)
1. Fully release collet end o f T ool J -2 1371-8.
2. Install collet end o f T ool J-21371-8 into converter
