AIR CO N D ITIO N IN G COMPRESSOR OVERHAUL 1D-17
Figure 1D-44 Assembling A-6 Cylinder Halves
o f 14 steel thrust races, including a basic ZE R O race, are
provided in increm ents o f .0005" thickness to provide the
required fit.
Feeler and T ension G age Set J-9564-01 or J-9661-01
m ay be used for gaging proper shoe disc size. Feeler G age
Set J-9564-01 or D ial Indicator Set J-8001 m ay be used to
determ ine proper thrust race size.

15. M easure clearance between R E A R B A L L o f N o.
1 Piston A N D A X IA L P L A T E , in follow in g manner:
a. Select a suitable com bination o f w ell-oiled Feeler
G age leaves to fit snugly between ball and axial plate.
b. A ttach Tension G age J-9661-3 to the feeler gage. A
distribution point checking scale or Spring Scale J-544 m ay
be used.
c. Pull on Spring Scale to slide Feeler G age stock out
from between ball and axial plate, and note reading on
Spring Scale as Feeler G age is rem oved (Figure ID -45).
Reading should be between 4 and 8 ounces.
d. If reading in Step “ c” above is under 4 or over 8
ounces, reduce or increase thickness o f Feeler G age leaves
and repeat Steps a. through c. above until a reading o f 4 to
8 ounces is obtained. R ecord the clearance between ball and
axial plate that results in the desired 4 to 8 ou nce pull on
Spring Scale.
16. N o w rotate shaft 120° and repeat Step 15 between
this sam e N o. 1 Piston Rear Ball and axial plate. Record
this m easurem ent.
If shaft is hard to rotate, install shaft nut on to shaft and
turn shaft with wrench.

17. R otate shaft another 120° and again repeat Step 15
between these sam e parts and record measurements.
18. Select a " N U M B E R E D " SH O E disc corresponding
to
minimum
feeler gage reading recorded in the three
checks just m ade above. (See exam ple in Figure ID -47).
Place the selected shoe discs in Parts Tray J-9402
compartment corresponding to Piston No. 1 and rear ball
pocket position.
Shoe
discs
are
provided
in
.0005"
(one-half
thousandths) variations. There are a total o f 11 sizes
available for field servicing. A ll sh oe discs are marked wtih
the shoe size, w hich corresponds to the last three digits o f
the piece part number. (See Shoe D isc Size Chart in Figure
ID -46).
Once a proper selection o f the sh oe has been made, the
m atched com bination o f shoe disc to rear ball and spherical
cavity in piston m ust be kept in proper relationship during
disassem bly after G aging operation, and during final
assembly into the internal Cylinder and Shaft Assem bly.
19. Repeat in detail the sam e G aging Procedure
outlined in Steps 15 through 18 for Piston N o. 2 and N o.

Com pressing Fixture J-9397 w ith Clam p J -8 0 0 1 -1 and
Sleeve J-8001-2 (Figure ID -48). Position D ial Indicator on
rear end o f axial shaft and adjust to "zero".
From bottom , apply full hand-force at end o f shaft a
few tim es before reading clearance. This w ill help squeeze
the oil out from /b etw een m ating parts. N o w push upward
again and record m easurem ent. D ial Indicator increm ents
are .001"; therefore, reading m ust be estim ated to nearest
.0005".
