1.
Check for proper cuff size.
2.
Check for residual air left in the cuff from a previous measurement.
3.
Make sure cuff is not too tight or too loose.
4.
Make sure cuff and heart are at same level, otherwise hydrostatic
pressure will offset the NIBP value.
5.
minimize patient movement during measurement.
6.
Check for leak in cuff or tubing.
7.
Patient may have a weak pulse.
Measurement Limitations
The measurement may be inaccurate or impossible:
⚫
Measurements are impossible with heart rate extremes of less than 40 bpm or greater than
300 bpm, or if the patient is on a heart-lung machine.
⚫
With excessive and continuous patient movement such as shivering or convulsions
⚫
if a regular arterial pressure pulse is hard to detect
⚫
With cardiac arrhythmias
⚫
With rapid blood pressure changes
⚫
With severe shock or hypothermia that reduces blood flow to the peripheries
⚫
With obesity, where a thick layer of fat surrounding a limb dampens the oscillations coming
from the artery
⚫
On an edematous extremity.
