Measure of Indenter Geometry Using the Indentation Technique
Based on the calibration procedure used in instrumented
nano-indentation testing, the indenter geometry can be characterized by
performing an indentation test on a material for which the elastic
modulus is known. Fused silica is commonly used for this purpose.
Rounding in the extremity of the indenter tip becomes a critical factor,
given that the geometry is so crucial to the calculations. The rounded tip
can be characterized by looking at the evolution of the equivalent
indenter width compared to the indenter height, shown schematically in
.
