Continuous Stiffness Measurement A

, the CSM option was used to measure the Young’s
modulus and hardness as a continuous function of penetration into a
10-micron nickel-alloy coating deposited on aluminum. As the indenter
penetration increases, the data are increasingly influenced by the
presence of the relatively soft aluminum substrate. However, when the
penetration into the test surface is small (less than 200 nm), the
measured properties are that of the Ni-alloy layer alone; the Young’s
modulus and hardness of this particular Ni-alloy coating are 150±6 GPa
and 7.6±0.2 GPa, respectively.
