ONFIGURATION
After you have created a unique password for your User Name
(remember, this User Name account must have Administrator privileges),
you can configure your WAN protocol settings as described in the
Accessing the WAN Configuration
section of this chapter.
Supported WAN
Protocols
The OfficeConnect Gateway supports the following WAN protocols:
■
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
■
PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol)
ATM (Asynchronous
Transfer Mode)
ATM is a network technology widely used by Service Providers. ATM
supports real time data, voice, and video on LANs and WANs. The
following ATM data encapsulation options are supported:
■
RFC 1483 (ATM Adaptation Layer 5 Protocol)
The network data traffic is encapsulated in accordance with the
specifications for ATM identified in RFC 1483.
■
RFC 1483-MER (MAC Encapsulated Routing)
This option supports bridged encapsulation. It is used when your
Service Provider is using a bridged network, but you need to use IP
routing on your LAN.
PPP (Point-to-Point
Protocol)
PPP is another protocol widely used by Service Providers for enabling
Internet Access. This data link protocol can also carry higher level
protocols. PPP encapsulates protocols in specialized Network Control
Packets. PPP also supports password protection using the Password
Authentication Protocol (PAP) and the more secure Challenge Handshake
Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
The OfficeConnect Gateway supports the following PPP encapsulation
protocols:
■
PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet encapsulation)
■
PPPoA (LLC-SNAP) -- Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM with (Logical
Link Control-SNAP encapsulation)
■
PPPoA (VC-Mux) -- Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM with Virtual
Circuit Multiplexing encapsulation)
