8.1.4.
Each of the two testing rounds consists of 100 deployed canisters and five
additional canisters, which are designated as field controls, placed in a
sealed plastic bag, and set aside.
8.1.5.
At the test area, a location is designated for the thermometer and the rain
gauge where (after installation) they will remain in place for the duration
of the test. The on-site weather station can also be utilized to monitor
temperature and rainfall during the testing event.
8.1.6.
The deployment of the canisters begins at a convenient location,
whether on the tailings beach, the soil-covered tailings area or other
chosen location. The canisters are evenly distributed over the test areas.
8.1.7.
Each canister is carefully placed on the ground where dirt is banked
around the base to form a containment seal; a location label is placed on
the canister; and a pin flag is marked with the location ID and placed
beside the canister.
NOTE: A break in the sequential numbering of the canisters during
retrieval is utilized to identify any missed canisters.
8.1.8.
Two colors of pin flags are used during the testing, one for tailings beach
region and one for the soil-covered region. The two-color system is used
to assure proper area segregation of collected canisters and proper
assignment to the pre-designated numerical system.
8.1.9.
As the canisters are deployed, the deployment time and location
coordinates indicated by hand-held GPS instrument are recorded. These
coordinates are used later to plot the canister locations on a digital map
and/or to find specific test locations after test results become available.
8.2.
Canister Retrieval
8.2.1.
On Day 2 of the Radon Flux test, the round one canisters are collected but
only after the required 24 hour exposure period is complete.
8.2.2.
At retrieval, the retrieval time of each canister is recorded on the GPS
Location Worksheet.
8.2.3.
Retrieved canisters are returned to the initial canister assembly work
station and prepared for shipment. At the work station each canister is
disassembled, and the charged charcoal media transferred into a sample
container, sealed and appropriately labeled to identify the sample location.
