Activation of EGR

When the engine is running and the EGR is activated,
the solenoid (

9

) is energized and the valve slide (

3

) is

forced to its end position – fully open – in that the
enclosed oil acts as a hydraulic lock. Full oil pressure
is now delivered to the rocker arm shaft and the EGR
function takes over.

Deactivation of EGR

When the engine is running and the EGR function
released, the solenoid (

9

) is de-energized. The high

pressure that is present in the rocker arm shaft causes
the valve slide (

3

) to rapidly shut so that the oil return

connection (

13

) opens and oil drains out. When the oil

pressure falls to 1 bar (100 kPa) [14.5 PSI] the valve
slide is returned to the control position.
