Inspect the crankshaft; refer to 

Crankshaft,

Inspection page 224

.

2 

Check that the crankshaft is clean, that all bearing
surfaces are fault free and that the oil channels
are open. Install the crankshaft gear with a new
O-ring. Suspend the crankshaft in a lifting strap;
refer to 

Crankshaft, Removal page 135

.

Lubricate all bearing surfaces with engine oil.

3 

Lower the crankshaft carefully into position. Align
the gearwheel markings with each other.

IMPORTANT!

Make sure that no connecting rod ends up in the
wrong position. The connecting rod separation
planes are very sensitive.

4 

When the crankshaft has been lowered onto the
main bearings, check that they are still correctly
positioned.
Install the thrust washers so that the locator tabs
end up in the intended notches.
