5-12 General Checks
SRS QMS Gas Analyzer
to install a second gauge in the inlet fitting of the QMS. The two gauges are then compared to see if the
internal gauge is correct.
Note that the gauge is a thermocouple type gauge and its sensitivity will vary significantly with the
composition of the gas being measured. It is calibrated for air or nitrogen. Its sensitivity deviates
significantly for helium, hydrogen, krypton, and some Freons. If the QMS operates with high
concentrations of these gases, the deviation can be enough to prevent the instrument from operating. In
such situations, you can recalibrate for the gas the system will operate on or compensate the setpoint.
Recalibration is performed at two points: vacuum and atmospheric pressure.
Vacuum Adjust
The vacuum adjustment can only be performed by pumping the gauge to a pressure less than 10
-4
mbar.
This requires another vacuum pump be connected to the inlet. Place the voltmeter probes into the
Analog Monitor and Ground test points. The analog output should read 0.375 V.
Atmosphere Adjust
With both valves closed, remove the capillary or plug from the inlet. This exposes the pressure gauge to
atmospheric pressure. Place the voltmeter probes into the Analog Monitor and Ground test points.
The analog output should read the following values depending on atmospheric pressure.
altitude
(feet above sea level)
pressure
(Torr)

Setpoint
The setpoint is adjusted at the factory to 3.9 V, which corresponds to 10 mbar. This value should not
change unless the gauge is damaged. To check the value measure the voltage across the test points on
the gauge. To compensate for gas mixtures, the setpoint can be moved to a higher voltage up to 5 to 6
V. This will allow the QMS to operate, but prevents some of the safegaurds from working when the
sample gas is a normal gas. Contact SRS for assistance in changes to the setpoint.
