To understand the applicable criteria for the structures with which you are
working, you need to read thoroughly the criteria section of each of the
following referenced documents.
Underground or Submerged Iron and Steel
RP0169 Control of External Corrosion on Underground or Submerged
Metallic Piping Systems
RP0285 Corrosion Control of Underground Storage Tank Systems by
Cathodic Protection
RECOMMENDED CRITERIA
There are three criteria that apply: two involve a structure-to-soil potential
of –850 mV in reference to a saturated copper-copper sulfate reference
electrode (CSE), and one is a polarization shift of 100 mV.
The three criteria defined are:
•
A negative (cathodic) potential of at least 850 millivolts
with the
cathodic protection applied. This potential is measured with respect to a
saturated copper-copper sulfate reference electrode contacting the
electrolyte. Voltage drops other than those across the structure-to-
electrolyte boundary must be considered for valid interpretation of this
voltage measurement.
•
A negative polarized potential of a least 850 millivolts
relative to a
saturated copper-copper sulfate reference electrode.
•
A minimum of 100 millivolts of cathodic polarization
between the
structure surface and a stable reference electrode contacting the
electrolyte. The formation or decay of polarization can be measured to
satisfy this criterion.
