An alternating magnetic field is established in the core from the
voltage applied to the primary winding. This field induces voltage in
the secondary winding. The ratio of the secondary voltage to the
primary voltage is directly proportional to the ratio of the secondary
turns to the primary turns. This ratio can be expressed as follows:
This exact relationship holds true
under no load conditions. Losses in
the core and laminations reduce the output voltage when under load.
In cathodic protection rectifiers, taps are located in the secondary
wiring so that several voltage adjustments are possible.

Impedance
is the total opposition that a circuit presents to alternating
current, similar to resistance in a direct current circuit. Impedance is
equal to a complex ratio of AC voltage to AC current. Impedance
