Meter Fuses – Instructions for Replacement
Meter fuses need to be checked and replaced if you have confirmed that your meter leads are
good (electrically continuous) and:
1.
When setting the meter to volts D.C. and shorting the positive and negative leads
together does not produce a zero (0.0) voltage; or
2.
When setting the meter to measure resistance (ohms) and shorting the positive and
negative leads together the meter continues to read “overload” (OL); or
3.
When reading current (milliamps or amperes) direct and an amperage reading is not
displayed or the amperage reading fluctuates.
To check fuses perform the following:
1.
Remove screws and remove back cover. On some meters, the fuses can be found in the
battery compartment.
2.
Remove each fuse and test using another multi-meter using the ohm resistance scale. A good
fuse will read a small resistance near zero (0.0). A bad fuse will read as over-load (OL) or an
extremely high resistance. You may also be able to visually see into the fuse to confirm if the
fuse element appears burnt, separated, or no longer intact.
“Bad Fuse”
“Good Fuse”
3.
Replace the fuse with the proper rating. Replace meter cover. Check for proper operation as
described above.
