When installing this type of test station, it is important that the different
color wires are placed on the pipe exactly as shown on the construction
plans. This is because the wires are used for calibrating the station and also
for measuring the current flow. If the wires are not installed as designed,
erroneous reading will be obtained. Should one or more wires be installed
differently from the designed color scheme, be certain the actual location of
the wires is shown on as-built sketches.
Pipe Casing
The original intent of encased piping was for the casing to support dynamic
loads caused by road traffic or trains to prevent harm to the pipe. Casings
become an electrical shield of cathodic protection current when the casing
and piping become electrically shorted, however. Sufficient
inspection
should be made to ensure that no metallic
contacts exist or are likely to
develop between the casing and carrier pipe.
