Particularly avoid fire, naked flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is sufficient
ventilation while charging and jump-starting.
Do not lean over a battery.
If, at low temperatures, the indicator/warning
lamps do not light up in the instrument cluster, it
is very likely that the discharged battery has fro-
zen.
G
WARNING
A discharged battery can freeze at tempera-
tures below freezing point. When jump-start-
ing the vehicle or charging the battery, gases
can escape from the battery. There is a risk of
an explosion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before
charging it or jump-starting.
It is recommended that you have the thawed
battery checked at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
!
Vehicles with a petrol engine: avoid
repeated and lengthy starting attempts. Oth-
erwise, the non-combusted fuel may damage
the catalytic converter.
!
Only charge the fitted battery with a battery
charger that has been tested and approved by
Mercedes-Benz. This device allows the bat-
tery to be charged when it is fitted in the vehi-
cle. The vehicle's electronics system may oth-
erwise be damaged.
!
Only charge the battery using the jump-start
connection point.
When jump-starting and charging the battery,
observe the following points:
R
only use jump leads/charging cables that are
not damaged and have a sufficient cross-sec-
tion and insulated terminal clamps.
R
non-insulated parts of the terminal clamps
must not come into contact with other metal
parts while the jump leads/charging cables
are connected to the battery/jump-starting
connection point.
R
the jump leads/charging cables must not
come into contact with parts that can move
when the engine is running.
R
always make sure that neither you nor the
battery is electrostatically charged.
R
keep away from fire and naked flames.
R
do not lean over a battery.
R
When charging: only use a battery charger
that has been tested and approved by
Mercedes-Benz and read the operating
instructions for your charger before charging
the battery.
When jump-starting, also observe the following
points:
R
the vehicles must not touch each other.
R
jump-starting may only be performed from
batteries with a nominal voltage of 12 V.
R
petrol engine: jump-start the vehicle only
when the engine and exhaust system are cold.
X
secure the vehicle by applying the parking
brake.
X
automatic transmission: shift the transmis-
sion to position
j
.
X
manual transmission: engage neutral
i
.
X
make sure the ignition and all electrical con-
sumers are switched off.
X
open the bonnet.
X
Fold cover
;
of the positive terminal
=
on
the jump-starting connection point upwards.
X
Connect positive terminal
=
on your vehicle
to positive terminal of the battery of another
vehicle using the jump lead/charging cable.
Always begin with positive terminal
=
on
your own vehicle first.
X
When jump-starting: start the engine of the
donor vehicle and leave it running at idling
speed.
X
Connect the negative terminal of the battery
of another vehicle to earth point
:
to your
own vehicle using the jump lead/charging
cable. Begin with the battery of another vehi-
cle.
X
When jump-starting: start the engine on
your own vehicle.
