Definitions
• Combustible Gas Meter
– An instrument used to sample the atmosphere to indicate if any
flammable vapors/gases are present.
• Confined Space
– A space having limited or constricted entry or exit – tanks and pits, for
example. It is a space that is designed to not be continuously occupied by personnel.
• Critical Safety Requirements – Defined for situations that are potentially life threatening.
These conditions require focused concentration and attention by the operator each and
every time the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit is operated. Proper attention to these
details and requirements will result in repeated safe operation of the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™
Delivery Unit.
• Dead Stock Level – The level of fuel left in the tank after as much fuel as possible has been
removed through the suction line. (As much of dead stock is removed prior to degassing.)
• Degassing – The action of removing hydrocarbon vapors from an enclosed space such as
a tank. The goal of degassing is to reduce the vapor concentration to a safe level which is
typically less than 10% of LEL.
• Earthing – Also known as grounding. Attaching a system to earth in order to create an
electrically neutral work environment. It greatly reduces the risk of static buildup and
discharge.
• Flammable Range
– The range of fuel vapor concentrations in air between the lower and
upper flammability limit. A fuel vapor concentration in the flammable range will support
combustion if ignited.
• Gas-freeing/Purging/Venting
– Terms that can be used to describe “Degassing.”
• Grounding – Also known as earthing. Attaching a system to earth in order to create an
electrically neutral work environment. It greatly reduces the risk of static buildup and
discharge.
• Hazard – The potential a substance, activity, event, process or energy source has to impair
the health or well-being of a person or the environment.
• Hot Work – Any work that has the potential to produce enough thermal heat to provide an
ignition source in an area where a flammable gas may be present.
• Inerting – The action of removing sufficient oxygen from an enclosed space (such as a
tank) to a level where the gas mixture will not support combustion. Inerting in practical
application displaces the oxygen (and some fuel vapor) in the tank with an inert (or non-
reactive gas) such as Carbon Dioxide (dry ice) or Nitrogen gas. This reduces the flammable
mixture of fuel and oxygen by dealing with the oxygen side of the fire triangle.
• Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) : – The minimum concentration of a fuel vapor in air that will
support combustion. Fuel vapor concentrations below the LEL are considered too lean to
burn due to an insufficient amount of fuel molecules in the mixture.
• Lower Flammability Limit (LFL) – Synonymous with ‘Lower Explosive Limit.’
• Nano-droplet
– The form of TankSafe™ product delivered to the tank being degassed.
Nano-droplets are 1,000 times smaller than typical spray droplets.
• Operational Limitations – Limitations that are applied to NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery
Unit operation so as to maintain safe, reliable operation of the degassing unit.
• Ready-To-Use (RTU) – Refers to the state in which the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit
and the TankSafe™ product are supplied. These products should not be modified in any way
prior to use as unsafe tank conditions may result.
• Risk – The probability that a hazard may fulfill its potential.
