As you can see, degassing the tank with air can result in a vapor-free environment. There is no
asphyxiation risk and this method decreases the risk of explosion by removing the fuel side of the
explosion triangle. On the other hand, this process can be time-consuming and the fuel vapor
concentration can rise to dangerous levels from the evaporating fuel that remains in the tank.
The degassing process must achieve and maintain the user-specified target concentration below
the LEL (typically 10% of LEL) so that inspections or maintenance can be done safely.
Water-filling is another method that may be used to reduce the risk of explosion. In this case,
water is used to fill the tank completely to eliminate the tank headspace. As such, any residual
fuel floats to the top of the tank and all oxygen is pushed out. If the residual fuel is skimmed off,
the tank environment can remain safe indefinitely but if it is not, the risk of fire still remains.
Moreover, this method can be time consuming and generates an environmental hazard due to
hazardous waste water. Introduction of water also presents a risk for fuel contamination.
The NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit solves these problems by creating an aerosol containing
nano-droplets out of a proprietary vapor suppressant, the TankSafe™ product, in a ventilation air
stream. During the degassing process, the presence of the TankSafe™ product rapidly reduces the
fuel vapor concentration to safe levels and maintains those levels (under average conditions).
