Safety requirements
Degassing a tank containing fuel vapors using standard techniques or the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™
Delivery Unit can have serious consequences to workers and equipment if not done properly. An
example of the potential fire/explosion hazard is shown below:
Figure 7
WARNING
: The ignition of fuel vapors can cause significant damage, fire and even loss of life.
Fuel tank degassing can be dangerous because:
• After fuel is removed from the tank, the tank is still full of fuel vapors.
• Once ther access port covers are removed, air begins to enter the tank (oxidizer).
• As air enters the tank through the degassing process, an explosive mixture may be present
until the fuel vapor concentration drops below the Lower Explosive Limit.
• Since an explosive mixture is present during this part of the process, ALL IGNITION SOURCES
MUST BE IDENTIFIED AND REMOVED.
• Follow your employer’s normal maintenance procedures for eliminating ignition sources
during product removal and degassing operations.
The NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit has specific location and earthing (grounding)
requirements to ensure safe, reliable operation. The unit can generate a potential ignition source
in the form of static electricity, but it is safe for operational use when the following precautions
are taken:
Earthing (grounding)
WARNING
: Proper earthing (grounding) is essential for the safety of workers and equipment.
Earthing (grounding) prevents static electricity build-up. It is required in order to prevent ignition
of fuel vapors while the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit is in operation. All components
of the unit are securely fastened and electrically bonded together. It is the responsibility of the
operator to ensure the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit is properly earthed (grounded) to
the tank and that the tank is properly earthed (grounded). A 10 m (33 ft) earth (ground) wire is
supplied with the NV-ST-1000 TankSafe™ Delivery Unit and is located on the outlet side near the
base of the unit.
