STARTING
INSTRUCTIONS
NOTICE
Your engine is designed to work
with the electronics in your
vehicle. If you add electrical
parts or accessories, you could
change the way the engine
operates. See your dealer
before adding electrical equip-
ment.
See "Driving Precautions" earlier in
this section for important safety
information.
Engine Starting
NOTICE
Holding your key in the Start
position for longer than 15
seconds at a time can damage
your starter motor. Wait about
10 seconds between each try to
help avoid damaging your
starter.
NOTICE
Do not idle the engine at high
speed for more than five
minutes to avoid damaging the
exhaust system.

1. Make sure the parking brake is
applied before starting the
engine.
2. Vehicles with Automatic Trans-
missions:
- The transmission must be in
P (Park).
CAUTION
Although the engine can be
started when the selector lever
is in N (Neutral), use it only
when normal starting is
impossible.
Vehicles with Manual Trans-
missions:
- With a manual transmission,
push the clutch pedal to the
floor and put the transmis-
sion in neutral. Hold the
clutch pedal to the floor
while starting the engine.
3. Turn your ignition key to
START . Do not push the accel-
erator pedal. Let go of the key
when the engine starts.
4. Let the engine idle for at least
30 seconds before driving.
NOTICE
When starting the engine in
very cold weather (below
-10°C), allow the vehicle to
warm up before driving.
5. Release the parking brake.
6. Drive at moderate speeds for a
little while, especially in cold
weather.
