P (Park)
This locks your front wheels. Use
this position to park the vehicle
and when starting the engine.
CAUTION
When you leave your vehicle,
be sure the shift lever is fully in
P
(Park) and the parking brake
is firmly applied. Don't try to
shift to
P
(Park) if your vehicle is
moving.
Your vehicle has an automatic
transmission shift lock control
system. With the ignition on, you
have to fully apply the regular
brakes before you can shift out of
P
(Park).
See "Shift Lock Control System"
later in this section for more infor-
mation.
CAUTION
Do not shift out of
P
(Park) or
N
(Neutral) with the engine
racing.
R (Reverse)
Use this to back up.
NOTICE
Shift to
R
(Reverse) only after
your vehicle is stopped. Shifting
to Reverse while your vehicle is
moving could damage your
transmission.
N (Neutral)
In this position, the engine doesn’t
connect with the wheels.
Use
N
(Neutral) when your vehicle
is being towed.
CAUTION
Do not shift out of
P
(Park) or
N
(Neutral) with the engine
racing.

D (Automatic Overdrive)
NOTICE
Use
D
(Automatic Overdrive) as
much as possible.
Use this position for normal driv-
ing in most street and highway
situations.
This shift position improves fuel
economy and reduces noise.
Note:
For faster acceleration, press the
accelerator pedal all the way
down and hold it.
The transmission will downshift
automatically.
When the vehicle has reached
the desired speed, let up on the
accelerator pedal.
The transmission will shift back
up to a higher gear.
See "Overdrive Defeat" later in this
section for more information.
2 (Second Gear)
This position allows the transmis-
sion to shift from
1
(First Gear) to
2
(Second Gear).
The transmission will not automat-
ically shift into higher gears.
This position gives you more
power but lower fuel economy.
Use it when climbing hills and for
engine braking when driving
down steep hills.
1 (First Gear)
This position locks the transmis-
sion in first gear.
This position gives you even more
power (but lower fuel economy)
than
2
. You can use it on very
steep hills or in deep snow or mud.
