Winter Parking Tip
Under cold weather conditions,
the parking brake can freeze in the
engaged position. This is most
likely to happen if the brakes are
wet.
If there is a risk that the parking
brake may freeze after driving
through water deep enough to
wet brake components or after
having the vehicle washed, do the
following:
1. Apply the parking brake only
temporarily while you put the
gear selector lever in
P
(Park)
for vehicles with an automatic
transmission or in
1
(First
Gear) or reverse gear for vehi-
cles with a manual transmis-
sion.
2. Park the vehicle, following the
previous instructions.
3. Place wheel blocks behind the
rear wheels.
4. Release the parking brake.
■
TRACTION
There are three systems that
control the vehicle: steering,
brakes, and accelerator. To keep
the vehicle under control,
do not
push any of these systems beyond
their limits.

BRAKES
Your vehicle has front disc brakes
and rear drum brakes and a dual
circuit braking system.
If the engine stops as you're driv-
ing, brake normally but don't
pump your brakes. If the engine
stops, you will have some power
brake assist left, but it's used up as
you brake.
The brake pedal may be harder to
push and it may take longer to
stop.
CAUTION
If one brake circuit should fail,
the vehicle can still be stopped
with the remaining brake
circuit, however, stopping
distance will be increased and
more brake pedal pressure will
be required.
Have the vehicle serviced right
away.
CAUTION
Do not drive with your foot on
the brake pedal. This will accel-
erate wear to brake compo-
nents. The brakes may also
become overheated, resulting
in longer braking distance and
an unsafe condition.
CAUTION
After a car wash or driving
through a puddle, the brakes
may not work well. Apply light
pedal pressure until the brakes
work normally.
CAUTION
Heavy braking when going
down a hill can cause your
brakes to overheat. This could
cause loss of control and a seri-
ous accident. Apply the brakes
lightly when descending a hill
and use a low gear to keep vehi-
cle speed under control.
Do not keep the brake pedal
pressed continuously.
See "Brake System Warning Light"
in Section 1.
