If the fluid is contaminated or

transmission fluid.

NOTICE

Take care to prevent contami-

nation. Contaminated fluid can

affect performance and lead to

costly repairs.
To prevent contamination of

the fluid, make sure the reser-

voir and cap are thoroughly

clean before removing the cap.

Check the fluid only when the

engine is running, the vehicle is

parked on a level surface and the

shift lever is in

(Park).

The fluid should be at the normal

operating temperature when you

check it.
Normal operating temperature for

the fluid is between 70°C and

80°C, and can be reached after

driving about 5 km in a city traffic.

To check the fluid:

1. Park the vehicle on a level

surface.

2. With the shift lever in

(Park),

start the engine.

3. With your foot on the brake

pedal, move the shift lever

through each gear range,

pausing for about 3 seconds in

each range. Then position the

shift lever in

(Park).

4. With the engine running at

idle speed, remove the dip-

stick, wipe it clean and reinsert

it by pushing it down all the

way.

5. Remove the dipstick again and

check the fluid level.
The level should be between

the

MIN

and

MAX

marks.

Also check to make sure the

fluid is not contaminated.

6. If the fluid is below the

MIN

mark, you should add fluid.
Add only enough fluid to bring

the fluid level up to the

MAX

mark.
See the "Recommended Fluids

and Lubricants" chart later in

this section to determine what

kind of fluid to use.

CAUTION

When you add fluid to the auto-

matic transmission, make sure

not to overfill it. Overfilling will

result in leakage on hot engine

parts, and might start a fire.
Too much or too little fluid can

damage your transmission.

7. Reinsert the dipstick and

check the fluid level again to

verify the reading.

8. Reinstall the dipstick.
