BRAKING IN EMERGENCIES
At some time, nearly every driver
gets into a situation that requires
hard braking.
Unless your vehicle is equipped
with antilock brakes, your initial
instinct to hit the brake pedal hard
and hold it down may be the
wrong thing to do. The wheels
could stop rolling. If they do, the
vehicle would not be able to
respond to your steering.
Momentum would carry your
vehicle in whatever direction it was
headed when the wheels stopped
rolling. The vehicle could go off
the road, into traffic or into the
very thing you were trying to
avoid.
If your vehicle is not equipped with
antilock brakes and you find your-
self in a situation that requires hard
braking, press the brake pedal
with steadily increasing pressure to
give you maximum braking while
maintaining steering control.
In an emergency, you may want to
squeeze the brakes hard without
locking the wheels. If you hear or
feel the wheels sliding, ease off the
brake pedal. This will help you
retain steering control.
If your vehicle is equipped with
antilock brakes, see "Antilock Brake
System" later in this section.
Brake Pedal Travel
See your dealer if the brake pedal
does not return to normal height,
or if there is a rapid increase in
pedal travel. This could be a sign of
brake trouble.

Brake Pedal Free Play
Brake pedal free play must be
6-10 mm.
To check the brake pedal free play,
turn the engine off and press the
brake pedal several times to
deplete the vacuum in the brake
system. Then, when you press the
brake pedal by hand, measure the
distance the pedal moves until
there is a slight resistance.
See your dealer if the brake pedal
free play differs from the norm.
The brakes need to be adjusted.
Antilock Brake System
(If equipped)
The antilock brake system helps
you maintain directional stability
on wet or slippery road surfaces. It
automatically controls the brake
operation when braking.
This occurs only during a brake
application which would have
caused one or more wheels to
lock. You don't have to 'pump' the
brakes. Just hold the brake pedal
down. You may feel or hear it
pulsate, but this is normal.
The antilock brake system can help
you maintain steering control
during a hard brake application.
NOTICE
The antilock brake system does
not change the time you need
to apply the brakes, and it does
not always decrease stopping
distances. Always leave enough
room to stop.
