Battery
CAUTION
Batteries have acid that can
burn you and gas that can
explode. You can be hurt badly
if you aren't careful.
Batteries contain toxic materi-
als. Wash hands after handling.
Make sure that you dispose of
old batteries in accordance with
environmental protection regu-
lations to help protect the envi-
ronment and your health.
For important safety informa-
tion, see the section titled
"Important Safety Precautions".
CAUTION
Do not use a match or flame
near a vehicle's battery. If you
need more light, use a flash-
light.
Do not smoke near a vehicle's
battery.
When working around a vehi-
cle's battery, shield your eyes
with protective glasses.
Keep children away from vehi-
cle batteries.
Your vehicle is equipped with a
battery that requires no periodic
maintenance.
To extend the life of your vehicle’s
battery, do the following:
• Keep the battery mounted
securely.
• Keep the top of the battery
clean and dry.
• Keep the terminals and con-
nections clean, tight and
coated with petroleum jelly or
terminal grease.
• Immediately rinse off any
spilled electrolyte using a solu-
tion of water and baking soda.
• If the vehicle is not going to be
driven for an extended period
of time, disconnect the cable
from the negative ("-") terminal
of the battery to prevent dis-
charge and charge the battery
every six weeks.

Cleaning Battery Terminals
1. Turn off the ignition and
remove the key.
2. Use a wrench to loosen and
remove the battery cable
clamps from the terminals.
Always disconnect the nega-
tive (-) terminal first.
3. Use a wire brush or a terminal
cleaning tool to clean the
terminals.
4. Check the battery terminals
for white or bluish powder
which are signs of corrosion.
5. Remove any corrosion with a
solution of baking soda and
water. The solution will bubble
and turn brown.
6. When the bubbling stops,
wash the solution off with
plain water and dry the bat-
tery with a cloth or paper
towel.
7. Reconnect and tighten the
positive (+) terminal, then the
negative (-) terminal.
Always reconnect the negative
(-) terminal last.
CAUTION
When reconnecting the cable
to the battery, be careful to
ensure the clamps are fully seat-
ed, then tighten the retaining
bolts so the clamps will not
vibrate loose.
Be sure to attach the red cable
to the positive (+) battery termi-
nal and the black cable to the
negative (-) battery terminal.
Connecting the battery cables
to the wrong terminals can
result in injury and damage to
the vehicle and other property.
8. Coat the terminals with
petroleum jelly or terminal
grease to help prevent future
corrosion.
