Seats and Restraints
. . . 116
CAUTION
Both the safety belt restraint
system and the air bag restraint
system are designed to best
protect adults.
Anyone who is up against, or
very close to, an inflating air
bag could be seriously injured
or killed.
Everyone in your vehicle who
has outgrown child restraints
should wear a safety belt prop-
erly, whether or not there is an
air bag for that person.
Be sure that if children are too
small to be well restrained by
the safety belt system, that they
are secured in an appropriate
child restraint. See "Child
Restraints" later in this section.
CAUTION
A child in a rear-facing child
restraint in the front passenger
seating position could be seri-
ously injured or killed if the
passenger's air bag inflates. This
is because the back of the
restraint would be very close to
the inflating air bag.
In vehicles with the front
passenger's inflatable restraint
system, always secure a rear-
facing child restraint in the rear
seat.
See "Child Restraints" later in
this section.
CAUTION
Air bags are designed to be
used with the safety belts. Even
with an air bag, if you are in a
crash and not wearing a safety
belt, your injuries could be
much worse.

Section
2
CAUTION
If you are too close to an inflat-
ing air bag, it could seriously
injure you. Safety belts help
keep you in position in case an
air bag inflates in a collision.
The driver should sit as far back
as possible while still able to
maintain control of the vehicle.
Tilt the steering wheel down-
ward while driving.
Vehicle occupants should not
lean or rest any body part
against the trim covering the air
bag modules.
CAUTION
Frontal air bags are not
designed to inflate at all in roll-
overs, rear collisions, or low-
speed frontal crashes, or in
many side crashes.
Side impact air bags are not
designed to inflate in rollovers,
or in rear, frontal or low-speed
side crashes.
An air bag can inflate in moder-
ate to severe non-collision situ-
ations such as slamming the
undercarriage or other solid
component of the vehicle in a
dip in the driving surface where
the crash sensors generate a
signal equivalent to a crash into
a solid immovable barrier.
CAUTION
Do not attach anything to the
area from where the air bag
inflates.
If something is between an
occupant and an air bag, the air
bag might not inflate properly
or it might force the object into
the occupant, causing severe
injury or even death.
The path of an inflating air bag
must be kept clear of any
objects at all times.
Do not damage the air bag
covers.
