Seats and Restraints
. . . 122
CAUTION
Newborn infants need
complete support, including
support for the head and neck.
In a crash, an infant in a rear-
facing child seat settles into the
restraint, so the crash forces can
be distributed across the stron-
gest parts of an infant’s body,
the back and shoulders.
Infants should always be
secured in appropriate infant
restraints.
CAUTION
The body structure of a young
child is different from an adult
or older child, for whom the
safety belts are designed.
A young child’s hip bones are
still so small that the vehicle’s
regular safety belt may not
remain low on the hip bones, as
it should. Instead, it may settle
up around the child’s abdo-
men. In a crash, the belt would
apply force on a body area that
is unprotected by any bony
structure. This alone could
cause serious or fatal injuries.
Young children should always
be secured in appropriate child
restraints.
These restraints use the safety belt
system in your vehicle, but the
child also has to be secured within
the restraint to help reduce the
chance of personal injury. Follow
the instructions that come with
the restraint.
If your vehicle is equipped with
child restraint top strap anchors
and the restraint that you need to
secure has a top strap, see "Top
Strap" later in this section for infor-
mation.

Section
2
CAUTION
Never use an infant carrier or
child restraint that hooks over a
seatback.
Accident statistics show that
children are safer if they are
restrained in the rear seat.
CAUTION
A child in a rear-facing child
restraint in the front passenger
seating position could be seri-
ously injured or killed if the
passenger's air bag inflates. This
is because the back of the
restraint would be very close to
the inflating air bag.
In vehicles with the front
passenger's inflatable restraint
system, always secure a rear-
facing child restraint in the rear
seat.
CAUTION
(Continued)
If, however, you secure a
forward-facing child restraint in
the front passenger seat, be
sure to move the front passen-
ger seat as far back as it will go.
CAUTION
Your vehicle may be equipped
with side impact air bags.
Do not install a child restraint in
the front passenger seating
position if the vehicle is
equipped with side impact air
bags.
