General
The removal of the piston rod gland (hereafter called gland) can be carried out in two
different ways, i.e. removing the gland together with the piston (Variant 1) or removing
the gland downwards into the crankcase leaving the piston in situ (Variant 2).
There are also two different executions to screw 2-part gland housing together:
1) with dowel pins and screws (1)
2) with fitted bolts (2).
On every piston overhaul, the gland must be dismantled and inspected. Excessively
worn or damaged parts are to be replaced.
It is important that the gland be in perfect condition when assembled. A possible earlier
than planned inspection of the gland with a piston in situ can only be carried out under
difficult conditions.
To avoid accidents platform elements (94143 and 94144) should be used for working in
the crankcase. Take care that grids and platform elements are properly placed or
engaged.
Note: Never rotate crankshaft while platform elements are in position.
